Position Title:
Shelter Health Public Health Educator
Where are you from?
I was born in New Jersey, but I spent most of my childhood in my parents' hometown in Kerala, India. When I was 9 years old, we moved to South Florida, where we have been living ever since. The transition was difficult, but overtime, I grew comfortable with my dual identity. I am lucky to say I have two homes—one in Kerala and one in Florida.
Why did you decide to join NHC?
Through my volunteer and work experiences, I've seen how effective community health engagement and educational services can be in adverse health outcomes. I decided to join NHC to contribute to these meaningful and necessary efforts to expand access to healthcare services and health education for historically resilient, and under-served communities in San Francisco.
What are you hoping to gain or learn during your service term?
Through this experience, I hope to learn what types of services and approaches are most effective in helping San Francisco residents access the healthcare they need and deserve. I hope to build my skills in health education, patient interaction, and communication.
What are you most looking forward to during your service term?
I am looking forward to meeting the team at the WPIC program, connecting with my cohort, and exploring San Francisco as its newest resident! I am also excited to learn from the communities I will be supporting throughout this year.
