Serving, Learning, and Connecting: My Journey as an NHC Service Member

Discovering Statistical Information Regarding a Population 

One of the most eye-opening aspects of serving as an NHC Service Member has been learning about the realities facing underserved populations throughout Delaware. My host site, Humbly Assisting Humanity (HAH), works to eliminate disparities in hunger by providing food, essentials, and resources to individuals and families experiencing hardship. Through my service, I have explored data that helps tell the story behind the need. Many Delaware households continue to face economic challenges, and food insecurity remains a concern for children, seniors, and working families alike. Understanding these statistics has helped me see the importance of HAH's mission and how community-based organizations can address gaps that affect everyday people. 

Thinking About Who I Am 

Service work has also encouraged me to reflect on my own experiences. I am a graphic designer from Maryland, and today I find myself represented within some of the very demographics we discuss in our work. As an impoverished woman experiencing homelessness, I understand many of the barriers that individuals face when trying to access resources and opportunities. At the same time, I hold a college education and bring professional skills to my role. This combination of experiences has given me a unique perspective and a deeper appreciation for the importance of compassion, dignity, and access to support. 

Doing the Service Work, Regarding Volunteers 

Volunteers are essential to the success of non-profit organizations. At Humbly Assisting Humanity, volunteers are greeted warmly and welcomed as valuable members of the team. Their willingness to donate time and energy allows programs and services to reach more people in need. Working alongside volunteers has helped me understand the many moving parts involved in operating a nonprofit. Behind every successful event or outreach effort is a group of dedicated individuals working together toward a shared goal. Their contributions deserve sincere appreciation and recognition.

One of the most meaningful volunteer experiences at Humbly Assisting Humanity takes place during our food pantry outreach efforts in Wilmington. Unlike traditional pantry models, this service functions as a free community dinner where a catered meal is distributed to anyone who would like one until all servings have been provided. Along with the meal, we offer bottled water and a beverage to help ensure our guests receive a complete and welcoming dining experience. 

What makes this outreach especially impactful is its accessibility. Community members do not need appointments, referrals, identification, or lengthy paperwork. They simply walk up, smile, say "hi," and receive a meal. The interactions are often brief but meaningful, creating a sense of connection and belonging between volunteers and community members. Volunteers help distribute meals, greet guests, and maintain a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the organization's commitment to dignity and respect. Witnessing these simple exchanges reminds me that addressing hunger is not only about providing food—it is also about fostering community, kindness, and human connection. 

Organizing a Fundraiser 

Fundraising is both exciting and challenging. Gathering attendees, creating an inviting atmosphere, and generating community interest require creativity and persistence. One achievement during this process was identifying Applebee's as a potential community partner. Businesses that support local nonprofits help strengthen the communities they serve. As we continue seeking sponsors and funding opportunities, every partnership helps us engage more residents and expand our impact. 

The Community Outreach Liaison 

As Community Outreach Liaison, my role involves meeting people where they are and helping share the story of the organization. I support communication efforts, community engagement, and outreach initiatives that connect individuals with resources and opportunities. Through this work, I have developed a strong sense of belonging within the organization. Humbly Assisting Humanity's mission has become something I feel personally connected to, and I am proud to contribute to efforts that build stronger, healthier communities throughout Delaware.
