What is your title and role at your host site?

My title is Care Coordinator and my role includes providing education to mothers during pre-conception, inter-conception, pregnancy, and postpartum. I will also outreach to patients in order to connect them with programs in the community that are designed for their needs. Further, I will facilitate nutrition and physical activity programs for the people that I am serving.

 

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?

I joined NHC Florida because I found myself with a gap year while I applied to medical school. I decided that I wanted to do something meaningful with my gap year and I hope to have a large positive impact on the community through my service. I think that the NHC is an amazing opportunity to learn about communities that are different than where I’m from.

 

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

I think that my year of service will be an amazing opportunity for personal growth. I am excited for the opportunity to learn more about myself and how I can best help other people. As a hopeful future physician, I think that experiences in both teaching and learning from patients are invaluable. I think that healthcare should always be driven by an understanding of patient experience, and NHC Florida is a great opportunity for me to learn more about people. I hope that the time that I spend working with the community during my time as an AmeriCorps member will teach me about public health, outreach, and serving vulnerable populations.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

I hope to attend medical school! If that doesn’t work out, I may pursue a master’s degree in Public Health or Neuroscience.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

 hope to be finishing up medical school and entering a residency program.
