Pronouns: she/her
Position Title: Health Educator
Where are you from? Leopold, Missouri
Why did you decide to join NHC?
I am passionate about community health and prevention, especially through the vein of education and health promotion. However, these fields are often rife with power imbalances, resource constraints, and systematic oppression. Thus, I wanted to make sure that where I chose to serve adhered to community-based, community-led tenants meant to alleviate these imbalances. NHC Chicago was an organization that stood out.
What are you hoping to gain or learn during your service term?
I hope to learn how to engage with populations in a more community-led way. This includes learning how to use active listening and proper research to be able to meet and communicate with communities in a manner that seeks to both atone for previous harm and build a better, more equitable future.
What are you most looking forward to during your service term?
I am looking forward to connecting with community health leaders in Chicago and learning how they tailor public health education and promotion initiatives to their populations. I also am looking forward to learning how to engage local leaders in active public health changemaking.
