Educational Background: BA in Gender & Women’s Studies at Scripps College

Host Site: Women's Center of Jacksonville

What is your role at your host site?

As the Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Care Coordinator, I connect breast cancer survivors with resources for breast cancer advocacy, education, treatment, and emotional support. I co-facilitate a support group for breast cancer survivors, coordinate volunteers for our Survivor Advocate Program, and conduct presentations in the community to educate about breast health and promote Bosom Buddies programs.

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?

I wanted to advocate for the health care needs of underserved communities in a way that was grounded in relationships and accountable to the community I serve. I also wanted to learn more about the underlying causes of public health challenges. The National Health Corps’ combination of direct service, member committees, and training coalitions was a really attractive fit for what I was looking for.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

I’m looking forward to the cross-pollination of experiences and ideas between Corps members. We already have a lot of experience and passion as a group, and I believe we have so much to teach each other! I expect I’ll be pushed to see the world a little differently this year, by clients, mentors, and Corps members, which is exciting to me, but also scary. I hope that my experience in the North Florida Health Corps will provide me with valuable skills to continue to serve my community and to articulate where change is needed.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

I’m applying to graduate entry and accelerated nursing programs to pursue a career in women’s health.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I will be living cooperatively with a group of friends—taking care of each other and creating the world we want to live in. Eating well, sleeping well, and dancing always. Also: I will be an awesome, passionate, advanced practice nurse.
