Host Site: Florida Department of Health at Baker County

What is your title and role at your host site? As a health Educator, I will be working to improve the overall health outcomes within Baker County. By providing health screenings and health education classes, I will increase awareness of health issues and prevention techniques. I will educate middle school and high school students on topics such as: managing emotions, decision making, assertiveness, positive relationships, violence, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and addiction. In addition, I will help youths practice better oral hygiene as well as provide support for Diabetes Self-Management.

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps? I joined AmeriCorps because I needed to work for a noble cause. I have decided to enter the health care field because I didn't feel satisfied working in media. 

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service? I hope to come away with an understanding of the challenges that millions of Americans face every day, as well as a sense of fulfillment. 

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service? I hope to become a health care provider in some capacity. My goal is to get into a Physician Assistant program in my hometown, Philadelphia.
 

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years? I see myself working as a Physicial Assistant in Philidelphia. I'd like to work in undervedeveloped parts of the world too, but first I want to be voice for change in my community. I want to establish meaningful connections with people who need guidance and lifestyle changes.
