Where are you from?

I was originally born in Los Angeles, California but raised in Houston, Texas. Because I moved at a very young age, I consider myself a Texan but have always wanted to learn more about California and its diverse culture. Therefore, I’m really excited to move and live in San Francisco for this upcoming service term. I can’t wait for the better weather, food, and adventures that the city holds.

Why did you decide to join NHC?

I joined NHC for both a combination of both personal and professional reasons. My main professional reason lies behind my hopes that my experiences with NHC will help to build me into a more informed and empathetic future physician. I also think it’s vital, before entering a health profession, to better understand patients along with the boundaries and inequities they face. For personal reasons, after graduating college I craved to find an identity outside of being a student and was intrigued in serving/volunteering full time. Especially after serving a previous term with NHC Chicago, I felt called to come back and serve another year but wanted to explore and serve a new community.

What are you hoping to gain or learn during your service term?

What I look forward to the most in this upcoming service term are the experiences and conversations I’ll share with those in the community I am able to serve and meet. With these experiences, I hope to gain insight and learn more about both the injustices in the current systems and what kind of a role I can play in fighting them. Most of all, I’m excited to be able to serve full time to challenge myself and what I am capable of. Lastly, in this upcoming year full of growth and change, I hope to grow my heart for service.

What are you most looking forward to during your service term?

I am most looking forward to the relationships I hope to form with my cohort, local community, and fellow staff members in the clinics. Especially coming from Texas where there’s no life outside of the AC in your own home, I am also so stoked to be able to explore the city and the outdoors. I also cannot wait to try out all the local foods and coffee shops and make friends in the process!
