Educational Background: Graduated from Virginia Tech in 2013 with a BS in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise. Go Hokies!

Philadelphia Health Corps Role: Health and Fitness Advocate at Penrose Elementary School

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?  I joined PHC because I wanted to see first hand what I had been learning about in the classroom for so many years. I felt it was important to immerse myself in the community in order to really understand the health care system. This experience is teaching me how health is impacted by countless social and environmental factors. Because of this experience I will be better prepared to assist my patients in overcoming these obstacles in my future career as a physician.

Where do you want to be in five years? What do you want to be doing?  In 5 years I will hopefully be graduating medical school and beginning my residency.

What is your favorite part of service?  My favorite part of service has been getting to know all the students at Penrose School. The first week of school two 5th grade girls told me they were "allergic to exercise" and every time I would walk near them they would start to fake sneeze. After being completely over the top and making them walk around with me at recess for a few days they started to initiate games on their own. The next week they even brought in a double dutch rope and tried to teach me to jump. I love that I am building relationships with the students and am able to see the little changes each day as they develop healthy habits.
