The National Health Corps Florida (NHC Florida) is a program of the National Health Corps. The National Health Corps is a National Direct AmeriCorps Service program that was founded in 1994. The NHC Florida Program was launched in 2004 and is currently administered by the Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition through partnerships with local non-profit and government organizations called host sites. Host Sites apply to partner with NHC Florida and host a NHC Florida member to deliver direct services to clients to achieve the mission of the NHC while expanding the host site’s capacity.
The mission of the NHC is to foster healthy communities by delivering and connecting those who need it most with health and wellness education, benefits and services, while developing tomorrow's compassionate health leaders.
The mission is accomplished by NHC Florida AmeriCorps members who commit to a 1700 hour/46 week term of service at various public health focused nonprofit and government partners in five counties in North Florida, including Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau, and St. Johns. Members provide direct services through their host site including activities like enrolling uninsured patients into Medicaid or the market exchange, enrolling patients into prescription medication assistance programs, enrolling pregnant women into programs like Healthy Start, facilitating nutrition and fitness education with school children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities, providing health education workshops on topics such as chronic disease prevention and smoking cessation, facilitating STD/HIV and pregnancy prevention education to teens, and helping people navigate the health care system by making appointments and providing free health screenings.
“I joined AmeriCorps because I desire to serve as a positive role model in my community
by propelling the people I encounter to enhance their health and wellness
through education and action.” –Lauren
“I joined AmeriCorps because I want to engage in tangible service to those who
do not have access to health care.” Han
