Barnabas Health Services
What is your title and role at your host site?
I will be serving as a care coordinator in the Rx wellness program at Barnabas Health. The mission of Barnabas Health Services is to connect people in need with the resources necessary to improve health and wellbeing. As a care coordinator, I will be providing nutrition and wellness education. I will also be enrolling patients into the Rx for healthy living program which includes one-on-one counseling and wellness classes in healthy cooking, smoking cessation, and stress management.
Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
I joined the National Health Corps Florida program because I want to make a positive impact on the health of a community. I also want to learn more about the real world implementation of healthcare to be better prepared for a career in medicine. I believe that health is a fundamental human right and I want to ensure that everyone has the resources to achieve wellbeing.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I am hoping to gain a better understanding of the barriers that prevent people from being healthy. I would like to explore the various social and environmental factors that contribute to the health of a community. I want to make a positive impact on Nassau County and help in whatever way I can. I am excited to make new friends from around the country who share similar goals.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After serving at Barnabas Health Services, my goal is to enroll in medical school. I plan to study cardiology and the prevention of chronic diseases.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I hope that I will have graduated medical school and started a residency in internal medicine. I would like to live near the ocean or maybe a river. I hope that I will be doing good in a part of the world that needs healthcare.
