A question I have heard numerous times from patients and Gateway employees over the past two months is: “What is AmeriCorps?” Answering this question is a challenge in itself, but luckily I had a year of experience answering this exact question while serving with AmeriCorps St. Louis.

But, we can grow a little by keeping these general ideas in mind when considering when and how we choose to spend our time giving back and serving the community.
While my host site has its own resources and its own staff, it is the collaboration and coming together with other similar entities that can truly bring about genuine and holistic success for our clients and the community as a whole.
I used to volunteer in the emergency room of my local hospital and I have a Bachelors in Biology, so I thought that I would be more than prepared to serve in a medical setting.
