How to Apply

Who can become an AmeriCorps member?

Members must be 18 years of age or older and U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents.  Some members have completed college and are heading to medical or graduate school, some have been out of school for many years. All AmeriCorps members must have a high school diploma or G.E.D., or commit to earning their G.E.D. during their term of service. We value individuals who have already demonstrated a commitment to service through previous volunteer work and who have an interest in a career in the health profession or human services.

How do I become a National Health Corps Chicago (NHC Chicago) member?

NHC Chicago has a multi-step interview process to ensure applicants are a good fit for our program and that we are a good fit for them!

All AmeriCorps applications submitted through the NHC application portal are reviewed by NHC staff. If your application meets the initial screening requirements, you will be sent additional application questions. If you are selected to move on to the next step, you will be contacted to schedule an interview from NHC Chicago.

Interviews are done in person, although virtual Zoom interviews are accepted if an applicant is unable to come to an interview in Chicago. Before the interview, the applicant should review the available service descriptions for the organizations/host sites that are requesting a member. The applicant selects three of the service descriptions that they are most interested in based on their skills, interests, goals, and ability to contribute. If an applicant is recommended for an interview with a potential host site, their application is forwarded to the designated host site supervisor for consideration.

If the site agrees that the applicant is a possible match with the position an interview will be arranged by way of the site supervisor contacting the applicant. The Program Director solicits feedback from the candidate and host site and determines if the candidate will be offered a position.  Applicants can anticipate that the entire process will take at least two months from the time they apply.

What are the requirements to enroll in the NHC Chicago?

Before an applicant can be enrolled in the program, they need to provide the Program Director with the following documents: 

  • Proof of citizenship or naturalization (birth certificate, passport, etc.)
  • High school diploma
  • Photo ID (student ID, driver's license, public assistance ID)

Furthermore,  all members will also need to complete a Criminal Record check. Full-time members applying for AmeriCorps' childcare benefits are required to provide birth certificates for all children requesting care.

When Should You Apply?

NHC Chicago will be accepting applications on a rolling basis through the AmeriCorps website until all 20 positions are filled. The program accepts qualifying applicants who will commit to full-time service (1700 hours) over the 46-week term (late August through early July).
