Educational background: B.A. in Psychology, Minor in Studio Art- Converse College, 2016
What is your title and role at your host site?
I will be a behavioral health coordinator at Shadyside Family Health Center. My role will be that of a liaison between patients diagnosed with depression and their care providers, and some of my duties will include tracking the care of patients, providing follow-up for appointments, providing depression/behavioral health education, and working with the clinic staff to provide quality care.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
I joined the National Health Corps for several reasons. I fell in love with service while doing a term with AmeriCorps during college, wanted to do a second year of service before applying to graduate school, and fell in love with public health and the city of Pittsburgh!
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
Throughout the year, I hope to learn about the relationship between behavioral and physical health, how personal and environmental factors contribute to an individual’s health, and how to work on a collaborative care team. One thing I am very excited about this year is to have the opportunity to work with mental health professionals and learn the ins and outs of providing mental health care to patients of all backgrounds.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
My plans for after AmeriCorps are to pursue a Master of Social Work(MSW) with a focus on mental health and integrated healthcare.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I hope to be finished with my MSW and working in community or mental health. I have learned that I enjoy working with diverse populations, so I am very open to the specific role I play in that setting. Overall, I want to be providing high quality, patient-centered care to the people I serve as well as working to ensure that people of all backgrounds have access to the care that they need and deserve.
