Why did you join NHC?
After learning about the social determinants of health and health disparities in class, I began to view medicine through a different lens, one that expanded beyond the doctor’s office to the community. I joined National Health Corps to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between health and the community. I also wanted to spend a year engaging in meaningful service within the community.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I plan to use this year to figure out the next steps of my life!

Tell us about an employment, service, or research experience that was important to you.
In college, I was involved with Michigan Active Citizens: Alternative Spring Break (MAC-ASB). Through MAC-ASB, I spent my spring breaks engaging in service-learning with community partners in Detroit and Atlanta, learning how organizations were fighting to enact change in the community. These experiences challenged me to think critically about my involvement and role within the community, inspiring me to apply to Americorps!

What first sparked your interest in community service?
Growing up, my parents modeled how to incorporate service into life, offering their time and skills anywhere that was needed and encouraging me to do the same. In high school, as I became more involved in the community and began to seek out service opportunities, I joined several clubs that sparked my passion for service.
