Laura Gilligan

I hope to become a physician and I know the experience of serving with AmeriCorps, meeting people from all different backgrounds, and being surrounded by other individuals who share my passion for service will make me a better doctor and better equipped to care for my future patients!

Hometown:
Great Falls, Montana

Educational background: Bachelor of Science in Cell Biology and Neuroscience from Montana State University

Host Site: Hubbard House

What is your title and role at your host site?
I will be serving as the Violence Prevention Facilitator for Youth at the Hubbard House! I will serve with elementary, middle, and high school youth in the community to promote healthy and violence-free relationships, as well as to teach risk-reduction strategies. This will be done through
education in after school programs, charter schools, and the Hubbard House residential shelter.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
I am taking a year off from school between undergraduate and medical school, and the National Health Corps seemed like the perfect way to spend that year! The country is very divided right now and I think service is a great way to bring people together for a common goal. I hope to become a physician and I know the experience of serving with AmeriCorps, meeting people from all different backgrounds, and being surrounded by other individuals who share my passion for service will make me a better doctor and better equipped to care for my future patients!

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I am hoping to learn more about how our current healthcare system is affecting people from all walks of life, and what my role can be now and in the future to address the health disparities. I am particularly excited to hear from the children I will be working with about their current views on relationships, bullying, and abuse, and hopefully make a difference in their lives. I am also hoping to gain new friends and connections from my fellow service members!

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I plan to begin medical school right after my year of service, and eventually end up as a physician in a primary care field.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I will be finishing my fourth year of medical school and preparing for residency, hopefully in pediatrics, women’s health, or family medicine!
