Emmanuel Minnow

I believe NHC Florida will steer me in the right direction of giving back to communities and those around the world who desperately need it the most.

Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio

Educational background: Bachelors of Science in Public Health from the University of Cincinnati

Host Site: CAN Community Health

What is your title and role at your host site? I am a Public Health Educator at the CAN Community Health. I establish relationships with community partners to enhance awareness of the intersection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Hepatitis C (Hep C) and the misuse of substances, particularly opioids, in Northeast Florida. This is achieved via community networking, educational presentations, and coordination of HIV/Hep C testing opportunities at substance use treatment facilities

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program? I am currently taking a gap year before grad school. I figured the National Health Corps Florida Americorps program will be a perfect way to utilize my gap year while gaining hands-on experience and fulfilling my lifelong dream of giving back to communities and the underserved population. I grew up in a developing country where most will survive on less than $2.00 alone. I’ve been blessed and fortunate enough to come to the States to receive great education and a better life, it’s unbearable for me live comfortably and in luxury knowing there are children and families out there who need help. I believe NHC Florida will steer me in the right direction of giving back to communities and those around the world who desperately need it the most.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service? I hope to gain professional and cultural competency skills to further assist underserved patients in my community of service and future career field. I also want to gain valuable knowledge about community and public health and how they intertwine. But most importantly, I hope to make a memorable difference in someone’s life while serving with NHC.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service? After my year of service, I plan on going to grad school for my Masters of Public Health with a focus on Global Health.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years? In 5 years I hope to be working with either the Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization, Doctors Without Borders, United Nations, or USAid as a public health analyst or a doctor of global health.
