What is your title and role at your host site?
I will be serving as a Healthy Start Outreach Specialist at Florida Department of Health in Nassau County. I will be providing health education, health care access, and risk reduction education to women through the services provided by the Healthy Start Program. The care coordination of these services will work to prevent preterm/low weight babies and infant mortality in Nassau County. As well as reduce teen pregnancy rates and the incidence of childhood injuries.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
I have been involved in service since my teenage years. I want to continue to do service throughout my career. I believe this program will help me accomplish this and bridge my educational experience to the Public Health and Health Education field. This is because this program allows me to use my skills and be hands on. I have not yet had an opportunity like this and it will equip me with the training and experience to work with national public health and non-profit health organizations.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I want to gain hands-on public health and health education experience while collaborating with other aspiring health care professionals to grow personally and professionally. Through this I want to positively impact a community and become more prepared to impact more communities with public health and non-profit organizations.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After my year of service with AmeriCorps I plan to work for a national public health or non-profit health organization as a Health Educator. As a health educator, I want to work with maternity and child health and chronic disease prevention.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I plan to be a Health Education Coordinator for a public health or non-profit health organization. This will be continuing my quest to increase the health literacy of families and helping them adopt positive health behaviors.
