" I love serving with children of all ages and was very excited for an opportunity to meet so many young smiling faces."
I will be serving as a Care Coordinator where my primary goal is to increase access of primary care to children and families in our community. I will be working directly with other health agencies within our area to identify uninsured families and help them to enroll into the Children’s Health Insurance Program. I will also work with these families and assist with filling out the applications into the program and follow-up with them when necessary. I will also have the opportunity to participate in health education programs in which I will teach children about health, hygiene, and injury prevention.
Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
My main impetus that led me to join the NHC Florida program was my desire to serve the most vulnerable populations of people. As an aspiring physician, I believe it is crucial to connect with patients and understand their needs before beginning to aid them. Additionally, I love serving with children of all ages and was very excited for an opportunity to meet so many young smiling faces. Education is a passion that I recently stumbled upon while in college, and I was eager to be able to develop this passion while teaching young minds.
I am hoping to meet so many different families from varying diversities and make a true large-scale impact in their lives by helping their children have access to insured healthcare. On a more personal level, I am eager to learn how to work effectively with a team and understand some of the major healthcare disparities our country has.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
My plan is to travel to Europe for a few weeks, and when I return stateside, I hope to matriculate into medical school.
In 5 years, I would like to be fluent in another language, to have travelled to several different countries, and to have completed medical school and in an internal medicine residency.
